On Methuselah’s Trail: Living Fossils and the Great Extinctions: On Methuselah’s Trail tells the story of some of the Earth’s most remarkable inhabitants living fossils. Labelled ‘living fossils’ by Darwin, the ancient animals and plants Peter Ward explores have survived with little or no change the cataclysmic events that transformed life on earth. These ‘Methuselahs’ can tell us much about the history of life and about the great extinction periods in which so many other species died out. Charming – erik.tunstad@nrk.no – Oslo, Norway
Peter Ward is one of the best writers in this genre – personally I rate him with Wilson, Dawkins and Gould – at least when it comes to the art of telling a good story, creating a good picture.

“On Methuselah’s Trail” is one of the best books I have read about fossils and evolution. Not revolutionary, challenging or very complicated – just well written, charming, and – most important – it makes you want go right out in the bush to look for your own fossils!

Paleocommunities: A Case Study from the Silurian and Lower Devonian (World and Regional Geology): Fossil communities, chiefly benthic, from Silurian and Devonian rocks are looked at in detail within this book. Discussion of their environmental and evolutionary significance provides a unique ecological view of this intensively studied part of the stratigraphic column. It is hoped that this case-study will illustrate a new trend for palaeontological research and synthesis that could be applied to other time intervals. Forty contributions from all parts of the world discuss and exemplify the general principles of this massive compilation and provide descriptions of many of the shelly mid-Silurian and early Devonian benthic communities in encyclopaedic form. Biostratigraphers and palaeontologists, as well as evolutionists and ecologists, concerned with fossil communities and their evolution will find this volume of interest. This book forms the final report of IGCP Project 53.

Quantitative Paleozoology (Cambridge Manuals in Archaeology) : Quantitative Paleozoology describes and illustrates how the remains of long-dead animals recovered from archaeological and paleontological excavations can be studied and analyzed. The methods range from determining how many animals of each species are represented to determining whether one collection consists of more broken and more burned bones than another. All methods are described and illustrated with data from real collections, while numerous graphs illustrate various quantitative properties.

Chapters: Bone Wars, Dinosaur Renaissance, History of Invertebrate Paleozoology, Duria Antiquior, Kirkdale Cave, Age Determination in Dinosaurs, Saurian Expedition of 1905. Excerpt: Age determination in dinosaurs is mainly used to determine the approximate age of a dinosaur when the animal died.History Early attempts to estimate the longevity of dinosaurs used allometric scaling principles. Ages were determined by dividing individual mass estimates by rates of growth for similar, extant taxa . For very large individuals, growth rates were extrapolated to dinosaur proportions using regression analysis. The results of these investigations have been extremely variable as they depend on mass estimates and growth rates that are highly at odds with one another. For example, longevity estimates for the sauropod Hypselosaurus priscus range from a few decades to several hundred years. Recently, however, it has been shown that most dinosaur bones have growth lines that are visible in thin sectioned material viewed under a polarized light source. Growth lines Two types of growth lines exist: annuli , and lines of arrested growth (LAGs). Histological examinations have revealed that annuli are composed of thin layers of avascular bone with parallel-aligned bone fibers. The growth line annuli are found compressed between broad vascularized regions of bone with randomly oriented fibrillar patterns, known as zones.Lines of arrested growth, similar to annuli, are found between zones are avascular. They are, however, much thinner, and have relatively fewer bone fibers by volume.Studies on extant vertebrates indicate that the vascularized zones form during moderate to rapid skeletogenesis, and that abrupt metabolic disruptions of bone formation can trigger growth line deposition. Both types of growth lines …

Ecolution Artistry Eco-Friendly 14 Inch Colossus Pan with Glass Lid This pan sucks! – V. Wright – Capon Bridge, WV
Ecolution Artistry Eco-Friendly 14 Inch Colossus Pan with Glass Lid

I had high hopes for this pan. I had been looking for a pan this size for a long time. After I got the pan I read the instructions on how to use it because I hate pans that warp because I have a glass flat top burner stove, or when the teflon peels off and I wanted this pan to last as long as possible, I also threw out all my other old pans. I obeyed the instructions and use the pan on the lowest heat setting first and slowly increased so as to not mess it up but it still warped on me after about 10 dinners and now it’s shot. It was kind of expensive at for one pan but I thought it would be worth it if it worked well like it said it would. But it didn’t it says you can return it with an check if it is defective but they claim it is because over heating and I know it wasn’t but how can I prove that? If it worked well I was going to buy the whole collection of them but not now I will never but one again.

Marsh’s Dinosaurs: The Collections from Como Bluff Marsh’s Dinosaurs: The Collections from Como Bluff – Joe Zika – Cincinnati, Ohio
“Marsh’s Dinosaurs: The Collections from Como Bluff” written by John H. Ostrom and John S. McIntosh is an illustrated lithographic masterpiece of detailed dinosaur bones. This book is for the serious dinosaur predisposed. This book is a serious skeletal anatomy book with lithographs drawn with great detail to a scale, as some of these bones are so immense that they would dwarf a normal sized human being.

Como Bluff, in southeastern Wyoming, was the site of one of the greatest assemblages of giant and small dinosaurs and of minute and extremely precious Jurassic mammals ever to be found. This site has probably had the greatest impact on the study of paleontology. George Peabody and Othiniel Charles Marsh, the two men who, more than any other individuals, were responsible for the founding and rapid growth of palenotology, and the money to excavate this sight. The one hundred and fifty lithograghs published here were originally intended to be part of monographic studies by Marsh of the sauropod and stegosaurian dinosaurs, but now they are out for all to see.

I found this book to be a wonderful comparative anatomy book of the skeletal remains for these dinosaurs. Marsh named the Brontosaurus, now the Apatosaurs, Stegosaurs, and the Diplodocus to name just a few of the dinosaurs found at the Como Bluff site. These dinosaur bones are covered in amazing detail. If you were like me, when I visited the museums I wanted to see the dinosaur bones close up. I wanted to see the detail in the bones displayed, but never got the chance as they were roped off from detailed view or in a glassed in display case where you couldn’t get up close and personal with the bones. Now, I can finally see these bones close up and personal. You can see the detail as to where the blood vessels were and ligaments and muscles attached to the bones, and where the weight bareing bones supported the dinosaur as it moved. Even the teeth are shown and you can deduce what the dinosaur ate and how it chewed the food that it ate.

There is so much detail in this book that you can become overwhelmed, but the authors do a good job of explaining the purpose of the bones. The Como Bluff era spanned an interval of slightly more than twelve years, from early April 1877 to mid-June 1889 and thus, left its impression on the history of the American West, just as this book will leave an impression upon the reader of the dinosaurs fossil remains.

“Marsh’s Dinosaur: The Collection from Como Bluff” is a solid 5 star book that deserves a place on the bookshelf of your home library.
: Marsh’s Dinosaurs was first published to bring together the previously unpublished lithographs commissioned by the famous 19th century paleontologist O.C. Marsh to illustrate two of the famed dinosaurs ( Brontosaurus–now known as Apatosaurus–and Stegosaurus) discovered at and excavated from Como Bluffs, Wyoming, and now on display at the Yale University’s Peabody Museum. The discovery of fossil dinosaur and Jurassic mammal bones at Como Bluffs in the late 19th century is very famous in the annals of North American paleontology; the dinosaur specimens collected by Marsh are among the earliest collected dinosaurs found anywhere in North America. The lithographs are considered by dinosaur scholars, their students, and many dinosaur aficionados to be among the best and most detailed depictions ever made. The lithographs are complimented by a historical sketch of the action at the dozens of quarries at Como Bluff and at the Morrison Formation and Garden Park, Colorado, with maps, as transcribed from correspondence field collectors to Marsh in New Haven during the years these explorations took place (1977-1889).

Recourse to Violence

June 28, 2010

Why people resort to violence and take up arms?

Why do they resent uprooting of their farms?

Do we have any rights to uproot them and cause any harm?

How can relations remain cordial and warm?

There is people’s war against the apathy and misrule

There may be thousand of schemes with book rules

Who cares for book value if it lacks sincerity with good intent?

Do they have no right to differ and vehemently oppose and lament?

This is how armed struggle is resorted to and leads to violence

Disruption of normal traffic resulting into bloodbath hence

Why such revolutions take place when it has been rejected and uprooted?

Why innocents are killed in day light and looted?

There is no answer from civilized world to offer any solution

What can be root cause? Is it not the power leading to devolution?

No satisfactory answer may be found till it has reached its dead end

You will know nothing about who is your foe or real friend

It needs careful approach with application of mind

The problem needs address and new solutions to find

Why at all they should take the path of armed struggle?

It makes us weary of things as it creates more puzzles

There is complete failure on our part to reach out to them

They are carried away by poisonous thoughts and overwhelmed

There is need for resurrection and humanitarian approach

We must go in with different solution and ask for new ideas or vouch

This is not new development and has come all of sudden

It may be backed by others powers known as foreign

They may have their ulterior motives to be met

They have evil designs and goal is already set

They may not allow peace to descend on the soil

We must take all precautions for their moves to foil

It is not in our interest to keep the pot all the time boiling

It may have long implications and relations may be spoiling

If one section of population is alienated from mainland

The discontent may spread over other parts to crate different brand

It may result into secession of some of the territories to go for independence

this may not be taken lightly as simple incidence

Neither is it desired not appreciated

It leads to disaster and atmosphere stands vitiated

There is distrust and spread of whole scale violence

It has got no meaning in democracy’s presence

It is people’s right o differ

We are here to rectify and offer

Some solutions to their satisfaction

That may be healthy sign and good indication
